September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and Peterstown Middle School is blessed to have THREE childhood cancer SURVIVORS!  Today Brycen Parker shared his story of his battle against leukemia. PMS will be hosting a toy drive with all donated toys going to the hospitals where our survivors received treatment.  During “Empower Our”, students will be completing activities that go along with awareness and giving back to the childhood cancer community.  Stayed tuned for more updates…

Over the counter medication form explanation The form that was sent home with your child’s emergency care form titled “Monroe County Standing Orders Authorization Form” is a new form to our county so I would like to take the time to answer some of the questions that have come from it. 1. Why? In years past, Monroe County Schools worked with Monroe Health Center to provide nursing coverage. Monroe County Schools have now hired their own full-time nurses for each school so that the needs of your children can be better met with more available nursing. 2. What is this standing order for? Previously, your child was able to get over the counter medications if they had wellness center consent based off their standing orders for schools. In order to comply with WVDE state policy, any student who needs medications while at school must have a physician order for the medication and the medication at the school. 3. So what is this form? The form you were given is a template that allows your child’s physician to easily complete the details needed in order to be patient specific. 4. Who fills out the form? Your child’s physician in collaboration with you the parent/guardian will complete this form to meet your child’s needs. If you do not want your child to get anything on the list, simply do not check that medication or cross it out. By signing this form, you are stating that your child has had this medication before and it is safe for the nurse to administer to your child (as mentioned on the bottom of said form). Your physician will sign in agreeance and provide dosage recommendations in the blanks based of their height/weight/age. 5. Who supplies the medication? Per WVDE state policy, the school system cannot have stock over the counter medications. However, since Monroe County Schools are aware that this is a big change for students and their families, they have supplied individually packaged doses of all the medications on the form in various forms (liquid, pill, topical ointment, chewable.) for students with completed forms through this transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your school’s nurse or Jessica Thomas, BSN, RN, NCSN.
