Congratulations MVS Golf Team on placing second yesterday. Of five teams, Monroe County took first and second place. Great job for their first year as a team!
The PMS golf team is excelling as a first year team under the guidance of Mr. Chris Booth. They not only won their tournament today, but Kolton Dowdy placed first and Jaden Miller placed second. Way to go boys!!!
Students in 4th grade at PES got the privilege to meet local author, Cheryl Kula, as she spoke with them today about writing.
Mrs. Long’s class at PES worked in reading centers today. The student led each center and completed the each reading skill task.
College Choice Day at JMHS!
JMHS in WV Envirothon
Two JMHS Envirothon teams participated April 20-21 at Cacapon Resort State Park in the WV Envirothon. The Mavericks Purple team placed 10th and the Mavericks Black (rookie) team earned 21st place in a field of 32 teams.
The teams competed in field tests requiring knowledge in aquatics, soils, wildlife, and forestry and presented an original project showcasing a potential community program that was eco-friendly. The Mavericks Purple team scored highest in aquatics. Their project was a commercial composting facility. The Mavericks Black team scored highest on their presentation which was a community garden and playground. Their highest field test area was also aquatics.
Students participating on the Mavericks Purple team were Liz Adkins, Billie Dicken, Madison Noonkester, Wyatt Thornton, and Bryceson Whitt. The Mavericks Black team consisted of Michael Balboa, Amaris Gutjahr, Madisen McMillion, Parker Noonkester, and Eli Thomas. The teams are coached by JMHS Science teacher Becky Crabtree.
The community’s role in supporting these students is greatly appreciated. Financial support for the teams was provided by the Greenbrier Conservation District. Support through instruction was provided by WV Rivers (Autumn Crowe), WV Forestry (Joey Harless), New River Gorge National Park rangers, Monroe County Extension Office (Brian Wickline), and Bowers Lumber Yard buyers. The teams are also very grateful for administrative support from JMHS and MCTC.

Flag Retirement Ceremony
JMHS students from the Environmental Science class and members of the Envirothon teams traveled to the Dunglen Day Facility on Friday to learn more about water quality. New River Gorge National Park Rangers Jacob Hartsog and Eve West led instruction on benthic invertebrates and water quality testing. The group also visited historic Thurmond.
PMS 7th Grade Science students are learning about energy transfer. While studying different types of energy, we created our own workable windmills. Each windmill had to pass the test by spinning for at least one minute.
Students in Mrs. Jackson’s 4th grade class are reading Wonder. They choose a character from their book and described all the characteristic of the person and used them to design a character picture.
For the month of March, Brandon Eggleston (Communities In Schools Site Coordinator) at Mountain View Elementary/Middle School held a Read-a-Thon. Each student was tasked with setting their own goal for the amount of books read throughout the month of March and each student was also tasked with finding sponsors to pledge a total of $5.00 if their goal was completed by the end of the month. The class that raised the most money will be given a pizza party. The student that raised the most money was given a $50 Walmart gift card. We were able to raise a total of $1,817 dollars!!
The winners for the gift cards and pizza party are as follows...
Elementary winner for the $50 Walmart gift card - Azalea Nelson (Raised $200)
Middle School winner for the $50 Walmart gift card - McKenzie Grimmett (Raised $110)
The Elementary Class Pizza Party winner - Mrs. Megan Wikle's class (raised a total of $410)
The Middle School Class Pizza Party winner - Mrs. Jackson's class (raised a total of $251)
We also had a total book goal of 566 books, which surpassed our goal of 500 books read for the month of March!!

1. April 25th at Mountain View School at 5:00 pm
2. April 27th at Peterstown School at 9:00 am
We would also like to inform you that Monroe County Schools now has two options for the background check:
Be fingerprinted at the volunteer training by a Monroe County Sheriff Deputy or designee and pay an $18.00 fee by Money Order, Debit or Credit Card. Money order must be made payable to Treasury of the United States. Checks or Cash will not be accepted.
Select to do a digital fingerprint via Identogo, with the closest locations being Princeton or Lewisburg. This fee is $32.50 and must be paid online via Debit or Credit Card. A fingerprint code would be given to you once the required volunteer training is completed.
From our experience, option 1 does hold a risk of not being a readable fingerprint and individuals may need to be fingerprinted again which delays in us receiving the background check in a timely manner. The digital fingerprint, although more expensive, returns a background check in a shorter amount of time. It is the choice of the volunteer which option thy would like to choose.

Recycle, reuse, and renew has been the educational topic in Mrs. Ballard’s class this week. Today they used toilet paper rolls to create bird feeders. #WVEd
Congratulations Janet Miller, Monroe County Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Miller teaches 7th grade Science at Peterstown Middle School. She often connects learning to real life experiences, makes learning fun, and is a blessing to all students.
Congratulations Michael Biggs, Monroe County Service Employee of the Year! Mr. Biggs is a dedicated bus operator who goes above and beyond to ensure the safety of his students on a daily basis. He strives to build connections with his students on and off the bus, serving as a local pastor and little league sports coach. Mike also never hesitates to help other drivers or employees when needed, making him well deserving of the Monroe County Service Personnel of the Year Award.
This is a reminder that Friday, April 21 is a two-hour early release Faculty Senate Day. Students will be released around 1:30.
