Field Day at Peterstown Elementary
The 2024 graduates of the 2-year Biomedical Science program at Monroe County Technical Center presented their independent research projects at the white coat ceremony on May 7, 2024. The students partnered with mentors from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. They were responsible for using the lab skills and techniques they learned throughout the 2-year program to conduct a research project from start to finish and present their findings.
This year’s theme was microbiology/biotechnology. Jamey Miller determined which antibiotic was most effective at treating two different strains of bacteria. Parker Noonkester used DNA amplification techniques and gel electrophoresis to determine if there was a presence of bacteria in sources of drinking water. Hannah Rhodes tested the effectiveness of sunscreen using a mutant strain of fungi that was sensitive to UV light. Thomas Sibold successfully replicated a 1973 experiment that demonstrates the process of inserting antibiotic resistance genes from one species of bacteria into a different bacterial species, which allows the expression of the new gene. Hannah Jewell inserted a gene for a green fluorescent protein from a jellyfish into an E. coli bacterium, allowing it to produce the protein and make it glow.
The Biomedical Science program at MCTC allows students to use some of the same tools and techniques used in scientific labs and hospitals. It is a rigorous course, and this year’s graduates did an exceptional job of rising to meet the challenge, as shown by their final research projects.

PMS students were able to perform for the community last night at a dinner theatre. Janet Miller and Tami Brown worked diligently to put together the whole performance and we are grateful for their talents and abilities. Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without all the students and their gifts!
Peterstown Middle School has been working hard during Careers and Technical Education (CTE) companies to put together a drama performance. The past two days the students at PMS have enjoyed the performance. Here is a peek, with more to come…

County Nurse, Jessie Thomas, presented the importance of dental health to PreK students by reading a fun story and sending home a new toothbrush and toothpaste for each kid.

James Monroe High School held a “Pup” Rally on May 7th to introduce Maverick to his new family. Governor Justice, First Lady Cathy Justice, and Baby Dog were there to present Maverick to the staff and students at James Monroe. The Communities in Schools program along with the Friends with Paws program place therapy dogs into schools. Maverick has been a God-send. He brings smiles to everyone’s faces and provides comfort, support, and love.
